Key Scripture: James 3:5 - "Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!"
Understanding Offense
As human beings, we are naturally offensive, but that is not an excuse to be offensive. (Matthew 18:7)
Offenses are a reality, but we must resist being offensive with all that is within us.
We offend through words and actions—both must be guarded.
The Power of the Tongue
James 3:2 - "If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body."
Just as a horse is controlled by a bridle, controlling our tongue allows us to control our entire body.
James 3:5-6 - The tongue is like a fire, capable of great destruction if not controlled.
James 3:9-10 - With our tongue, we bless God and curse men—this should not be!
The Source of Offense
Matthew 12:34 - "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh."
Evil actions originate from the heart (Matthew 15:18-20).
Bitterness turns into hatred, and hatred fuels offensive speech and actions (Hebrews 12:15).
Our words have weight—they can defile others (Titus 3:2, James 4:11, II Peter 2:10, Jude 1:8).
How to Overcome Offensiveness
Recognize the Problem & Be Willing to Change (Repentance begins with intention but is shown through actions).
Identify the Source of Negative Influence (Matthew 6:22-23, Philippians 4:8).
Guard What You See & Hear (Entertainment, conversations, company we keep).
Take Drastic Measures if Necessary (Matthew 5:29-30 – Cut off what leads to sin).
Seek the Fire of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 3:11 - Jesus baptizes with the Holy Ghost and fire).
The Solution: The Holy Ghost
Luke 9:55-56 - The Spirit of Christ is to save, not destroy.
1 John 4:4 - Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world.
Acts 2:1-4 - The Holy Ghost came with cloven tongues like as of fire.
The Holy Ghost transforms the tongue, leading to self-control, love, and peace.
